Perio Protect: Minimally Invasive Treatment for Gum Disease

November 29, 2016

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every two American adults aged 30 and over has periodontal disease. Left untreated, gum disease can lead to tooth loss and other inflammatory diseases. That’s why PERFECT TEETH is proud to offer a minimally invasive treatment for gum disease called Perio Protect®.

But first, let’s talk a little more about the dental trouble you might be experiencing.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is inflammation of the structures around the teeth due to bacteria in the dental plaque. The three stages of gum disease from least severe to most severe are gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. Gum disease can be painless, so you and your dentist should be on the lookout for the worsening of these symptoms:

  • Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums
  • Painful chewing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Gums that recede from the tooth
  • Pus around the teeth and gums

What Causes Gum Disease?

Everyone has a lot of bacteria in their mouth. The bacteria bonds with the mucus and other particles to form plaque on teeth. The plaque that isn’t removed from brushing and flossing hardens and forms tartar. In an effort to get rid of the bacteria, our immune systems release defense cells that cause areas around the teeth to become inflamed. As our gums swell, they pull away from the teeth creating little pockets that allow more bacteria to settle in.

The inflammatory response to the bacteria in our mouths can also have an adverse effect on our overall health. Research is still being done, but studies have shown a connection between people who have gum disease and preterm birth in pregnant women, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory disease.

What Can be Done About Gum Disease?

  • Regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental visits help prevent and reverse gum disease.
  • Quit smoking. Smokers have more plaque build up, they develop deeper periodontal pockets, and they’re more likely to lose bone.
  • Take care of yourself. Stress and poor nutrition can weaken your body’s ability to fight the infection
  • Talk to your PERFECT TEETH dentist about treating your gum disease with a non-invasive treatment like Perio Protect and the Perio Protect Tray®.

What is Perio Protect®?

Perio Protect is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients with or without periodontal (gum) disease. This FDA approved treatment combines professional, preventive dental care with a home care routine using a special tray that delivers and seals medication below the gums to treat the disease. The advantage of Perio Protect is that it can treat the bacteria causing the disease in a comfortable way, minimizing the need for antibiotics or surgery.

The specially designed Perio Protect Tray is similar to a mouth-guard, but it has a special sealing system to deliver medication below the gums. You put medication in the tray and wear it for 15-20 minutes a day.
